Silence by Johan-N Silence by Johan-N
Some of you might remember Susi, a real eurasian wolf I made a drawing of back in 2014. She was also called "Red riding hood" due to her unique red coat.
Her struggle to live free caught the attention from people all over the world, and today supporters of her woke up to some devastating news.
------
Her history-
In 2010, Susi crossed the border of Finland and settled down in Jämtland, Sweden, close to the reindeer owned by our native people. It didn't take long until they requested approval to hunt her down. It was only due to her valuable genes that she was allowed to live and was instead tranquilized and moved further south.
As soon as she woke up, she began her 100 mile journey back to the north where a young male joins her. Together they prey on some reindeer, and the couple was moved back to the south. Once again they travel back to the north, but on the way, the male is brutally killed, either beaten or hit by a car.
Susi made it back to the north unharmed where history repeats itself. She was moved, but this time she roamed to a different area in the north, where she meets a new male and together they prey on reindeer, where another request to kill her is made and denied. But then something happened, a visit was made to the village of the reindeer keepers and suddenly a hunt for her is approved in 2013. The hunt for the couple began, and the male was killed within a few hours.
The hunt was then appealed and stopped by the Swedish Predator Association.
During this time, Susi was heavily supervised by helicopters and stalked daily by reindeer keepers. She was relocated a fourth time but roamed back to her new northern territory. In April, the reindeer keepers moved their herds to other feeding grounds, and Susi was safe, until the next winter.

Winter 2014,  Susi is still in her territory and has gained a new mate. The reindeer herd is back in the territory and a few of them get killed. A hunt for the couple is approved but before the hunt could begin, it is appealed by the Swedish Predator Association as well as a few others. The court ends up approving the hunt, but by that time the season was over and the wolves was safe.

Then suddenly all trace for Susi and her mate is lost. An intense searching party was organized but they couple is nowhere to be seen. Speculations are made of what could have happened to them, if they had drowned from crossing the weak ice or if they had been killed by poachers.
The Swedish Predator Association puts out a reward of 100,000 kr to any information concerning the wolves. Despite numerous tips, the wolves can't be found.
Susi was expecting pups last time she was seen, in that case there could have been entire wolf pack that may have come to an unknown but probably cruel fate.
Meanwhile, fans of Susi all over the world were hoping for her location to remain unknown, to keep her safe from poachers.

2017, today-
The police tells of a source that claims that a wolf has been killed, and that the source has seen a picture of the wolf in a freezer box. The source claims the dead wolf to be Susi, due to the well known red color.
----------
Thanks to Susi, the wolf population of Sweden has gained much needed recognition. Perhaps wolves in the near future will finally be given the respect they deserve.

Photos of Susi, taken during the relocations.

Wow, that was really hard to read ;; I wished that Susi would've be safe in our neighbouring country, but it looks like I was wrong... Tho she had longer life in Sweden than she would've had in Finland. Here people would've probably hunted her down immediately D:::

I hate poachers, due to farmers, and hunters The United States nearly lost the red wolves. Only recently after thirty odd years did red wolves reappear in the grand cannon. Up north in Alaska there was a young packless black wolf that would play with the locals dogs, and was even friendly to humans. He was protected by Alaskan state law, but was hunted down, and killed by hunters. His name was Romeo, he was eight years old when he was murdered.

RIP Susi. No wolf, or any wild animal for that matter, should suffer a tragic fate from the hands of a so-called "civilization". May your spirit find peace at mother nature's side.

Wow, she is incredibly beautiful - both in the artwork and the photographs.

I agree with many of the comments - wolves only hunt down the weak, actually helping the prey animals. Many people just cannot understand that. They see wolves as the "big, bad wolf" in the fairy tales - it's actually very sad and frustrating.

Susi's story will bring more awareness, and I hope that people can learn to coexist with the wonders of nature.

T^T Poor Susi. I wish she had not met such an end.... I hope that the litter she was expecting in 2014 made it and that they are strong and thriving, living well in her legacy.

It bothers me to know people can be so against anything they can't control.
Here, in upper USA, the timber/gray wolf population has slowly started growing again, but the second it increased at all, people want to hunt them down again. Wolves aren't even that aggressive most of the time- they take what they need, and not much more.

it's awful that people can be so cruel to such a beautiful and important animal. they think the predators are encroaching on their land, when really the animals have been living there for so much longer. people need to respect and preserve these creatures, because one day, they might be gone.

This so peaceful pic. So beautiful wolf and such a calm background.
So, I hope Susi is under good conditions,  just hidding away from hunters to protect her little wolves.

Oh... Rest easy Susi dear, and your mates and pups. Your tragedy should hopefully bring more awareness for those kin left in your wake.
I didn't even know Sweden had wolves anymore. I'll be doing some study and share tonight to honor this rare and tragic beauty.

The picture itself is very beautiful, and the story is very touching.

Hope this help humans to understand that we aren't alone on this planet and don't care about other living creatures is very dammaging for us.
In Italy we have a very similar problem with italian wolf reintroduction...
